SUMMARY:Hellenic Polytheism in Contemporary Greece and the Symbolic Struggle over Identity
DESCRIPTION:Vor­trag von Efs­tathios Kessar­eas im Rah­men der Mon­day-Lec­tures\, die gemein­sam von Max-Weber-Kol­leg\, Sem­i­nar für Reli­gion­swis­senschaft sowie dem The­ol­o­gis­chen Forschungskol­leg t³ The­olo­gie — Tra­di­tion — Trans­for­ma­tion ver­anstal­tet wer­den. \nIn this lec­ture I will first pro­vide a descrip­tion of the mul­ti-lay­ered scene of Hel­lenic poly­the­ism in con­tem­po­rary Greece\, and of the social and his­tor­i­cal con­text of its for­ma­tion. Then I will focus on the hos­tile rela­tions between the fol­low­ers of the ancient Greek reli­gion\, on the one hand\, and the pro­duc­ers of offi­cial ide­ol­o­gy and the Ortho­dox Church on the oth­er hand\, pay­ing par­tic­u­lar atten­tion (de)legitimization strate­gies employed by these reli­gious and ide­o­log­i­cal com­peti­tors. Final­ly\, I will demon­strate and explain why their con­flict\, rather than being lim­it­ed to reli­gious issues\, is extend­ed to the def­i­n­i­tion of eth­no-cul­tur­al iden­ti­ty.

DESCRIPTION:Vor­trag von Heike Grieser im Rah­men der Mon­day-Lec­tures\, die gemein­sam von Max-Weber-Kol­leg\, Sem­i­nar für Reli­gion­swis­senschaft sowie dem The­ol­o­gis­chen Forschungskol­leg t³ The­olo­gie — Tra­di­tion — Trans­for­ma­tion ver­anstal­tet wer­den. \nChris­ten erlebten und inter­pretierten Kriege wie ihre Zeitgenossen als ein lei­d­volles Unglück. Zahlre­iche Hin­weise bele­gen\, dass frühe Chris­ten im Mil­itär ihren Dienst tat­en\, der trotz christlich­er Forderun­gen nach indi­vidu­eller Gewalt­losigkeit kaum infrage gestellt wurde. Berührun­gen mit dem paganen Kaiser- und Göt­terkult schienen prob­lema­tis­ch­er als ethis­che Fra­gen\, wovon einige Sol­daten­mar­tyrien zeu­gen. Antiken Tra­di­tio­nen fol­gend propagierten christlich wer­dende Kaiser ihre mil­itärischen Erfolge als Aus­druck der Unter­stützung durch den christlichen Gott; im Heer und in der Kriegs­führung etablierten sich zunehmend christliche Sym­bole und Prak­tiken. Gle­ichzeit­ig doku­men­tieren die Quellen Anstren­gun­gen zur Lin­derung der Not von Krieg­sopfern.

SUMMARY:Scandal or Crime? Media Narratives and Survivor Complaint Testimonies in Australian Megachurches
DESCRIPTION:Vor­trag von Tanya Rich­es im Rah­men der Mon­day Lec­tures \nHill­song Church\, an Aus­tralian con­tem­po­rary Pen­te­costal megachurch\, is glob­al­ly rec­og­nized for its wor­ship music\, large-scale gath­er­ings\, and influ­en­tial charis­mat­ic lead­er­ship. As an icon­ic rep­re­sen­ta­tion of the glob­al Pen­te­costal move­ment\, Hill­song ini­tial­ly posi­tioned itself as a youth­ful\, demo­c­ra­t­i­cal­ly struc­tured con­gre­ga­tion\, empha­siz­ing acces­si­bil­i­ty and broad appeal. How­ev­er\, over time\, this focus shift­ed toward cen­tral­ized author­i­ty\, aspi­ra­tional lifestyles\, and the promi­nence of its founders and celebri­ty pas­tors – rein­forced by Pen­te­costal the­o­log­i­cal under­stand­ings of divine author­i­ty\, loy­al­ty\, and spir­i­tu­al dis­cern­ment.\nThrough ethno­graph­ic obser­va­tion and the­o­log­i­cal reflec­tion\, this pre­sen­ta­tion exam­ines the ten­sions between charis­mat­ic lead­er­ship\, insti­tu­tion­al nar­ra­tives\, and con­gre­ga­tion­al voice. The scan­dals of 2022\, which sur­faced through media out­lets such as Van­i­ty Fair\, Rolling Stone\, The New York Times\, Chris­tian­i­ty Today\, and Crikey\, high­light the var­ied ways sur­vivor tes­ti­monies and com­plaint col­lec­tives have been ampli­fied. This pre­sen­ta­tion explores how large Pen­te­costal insti­tu­tions nav­i­gate inter­nal com­plaint-rais­ing\, where infor­mal pas­toral chan­nels and for­mal legal process­es inter­sect with jour­nal­is­tic nar­ra­tives.\nAs lead­er­ship crises con­tin­ue to unfold across denom­i­na­tions and glob­al con­texts\, this pre­sen­ta­tion con­tributes to broad­er dis­cus­sions on insti­tu­tion­al account­abil­i­ty\, resilience\, and the role of sur­vivor tes­ti­monies in shap­ing the future of eccle­sial prac­tice.

SUMMARY:Religion\, Climate Change\, and Risks to Peace and Security: Insights from Mozambique and Zimbabwe
DESCRIPTION:Vor­trag von Joram Tarusari­ra im Rah­men der Mon­day-Lec­tures\, die gemein­sam von Max-Weber-Kol­leg\, Sem­i­nar für Reli­gion­swis­senschaft sowie dem The­ol­o­gis­chen Forschungskol­leg t³ The­olo­gie — Tra­di­tion — Trans­for­ma­tion ver­anstal­tet wer­den. \nCul­tur­al and reli­gious val­ues are cru­cial in defin­ing and fram­ing cli­mate change and its impacts. How­ev­er\, cur­rent human­i­tar­i­an and devel­op­ment dis­cours­es empha­size bios­pher­ic\, envi­ron­men­tal\, and vul­ner­a­bil­i­ty approach­es\, which favor macro and insti­tu­tion­al strate­gies for cli­mate action. These meth­ods mar­gin­al­ize cul­tur­al and reli­gious val­ues by sug­gest­ing they can­not be objec­tive­ly observed\, val­i­dat­ed\, or mea­sured. My pre­sen­ta­tion will focus on the inter­ac­tion between cli­mate-relat­ed con­flict\, migra­tion\, and dis­place­ment. It is based on par­tic­i­pa­to­ry method­olo­gies and ethno­graph­ic research con­duct­ed in Mozam­bique and Zim­bab­we. It will demon­strate how reli­gious and cul­tur­al val­ues are key to inter­pret­ing\, defin­ing\, and shap­ing respons­es to cli­mate-relat­ed con­flict\, migra­tion\, and dis­place­ment. It will cri­tique the dom­i­nance of tech­no­log­i­cal inno­va­tions not because it finds the sci­ence behind them wrong or unnec­es­sary but because there is more to the sto­ry than what techno­science con­veys. Fur­ther­more\, it will argue that cul­tur­al and reli­gious val­ues impart mean­ing to cli­mate crises and influ­ence the every­day prac­tices that affect people’s vul­ner­a­bil­i­ty and adap­tive capac­i­ty. Ulti­mate­ly\, it will encour­age a more inclu­sive approach to cli­mate change that respects and inte­grates diverse cul­tur­al and reli­gious val­ues.
