SUMMARY:Eating and drinking with gods: a comparative workshop
DESCRIPTION:Nar­ra­tives and prac­tices of offer­ing hos­pi­tal­i­ty to the divine have a place in numer­ous reli­gions past and present. Across geo­gra­phies and periods\,gods and oth­er invis­i­ble beings are offered human food and drink in human settings.Buddhism\, Hin­duism\, Judaism and Chris­tian­i­ty today\, and Grae­co-Roman\, Hit­tite and Egypt­ian reli­gions in antiq­ui­ty\, are just some of the reli­gions that offer instances of hos­pi­tal­i­ty for\, and even forms of com­men­sal­i­ty with\, the divine.\nEat­ing and drink­ing with gods involves com­plex forms of belief. On the one hand\, such hos­pi­tal­i­ty holds out the promise of inter­ac­tion with the divine in a know­able human con­text\, in the hope of anchor­ing divine pres­ence in the here and now. On the oth­er hand\, many of these prac­tices and sto­ries are marked by a sense of lim­i­ta­tion. They respond to a need for prox­im­i­ty with the divine\, yet often also reflect the uncer­tain­ty of divine pres­ence and the chal­lenge of imag­in­ing gods and invis­i­ble beings eat­ing in a human set­ting.\n\nThe work­shop will bring togeth­er experts in dif­fer­ent reli­gions\, geo­gra­phies and peri­ods with the aim of explor­ing hos­pi­tal­i­ty for the divine from a com­par­a­tive per­spec­tive. The pri­ma­ry focus is the reli­gious imag­i­na­tion. We are invit­ing pro­pos­als for papers on prac­tices\, nar­ra­tives and visu­al art in any con­text\, on top­ics includ­ing:\n\n-How do wor­ship­pers imag­ine com­men­sal­i­ty with the gods?\n-How are abstract beliefs anchored in con­crete man­i­fes­ta­tions of the divine? To what extent\, and how\, is abstract divine pres­ence made con­crete through var­i­ous sorts of divine anthro­po­mor­phism?\n-How do myth­i­cal nar­ra­tives and visu­al rep­re­sen­ta­tions of human hos­pi­tal­i­ty for gods relate to rit­u­al prac­tice?\n-How do humans expe­ri­ence divine pres­ence dur­ing rit­u­als by anchor­ing it in objects and spa­tial configuration?How do prac­tices of host­ing gods that use props and spaces help wor­ship­pers expe­ri­ence divine pres­ence in the here and now?\n-How does offer­ing human-style hos­pi­tal­i­ty to the gods com­pare to blood sac­ri­fice and to prac­tices of leav­ing food­stuff such as cakes for gods? How is human pres­ence and human-divine inter­ac­tion imag­ined in each?\n-The his­tor­i­cal devel­op­ment of these prac­tices as anchored inno­va­tions. How does hos­pi­tal­i­ty for the gods arise in dif­fer­ent cul­tures? SUMMARY:First International Congress of Studies on Popular Cultures in Greece and Rome\, from II millennium BCE to modern folklore
DESCRIPTION: Although Greek and Roman lit­er­a­ture rarely focus­es explic­it­ly on pop­u­lar cul­ture\, a sub­stan­tial body of evi­dence allows us to recon­struct what may be described as the folk­lore of the ancient world. From pre­cious tes­ti­monies emerge beliefs and ‘super­sti­tions’\, folk­tales and proverbs\, imag­i­nary beings\, songs and oth­er types of musi­cal forms\, folk-phar­ma­copoeia and med­i­c­i­nal reme­dies\, apotropa­ic ges­tures and prac­tices\, along with many oth­er traits\n char­ac­ter­is­tic of a pop­u­lar cul­ture of the ancients. This Greek and Roman folk­lore can often be approached (and effec­tive­ly com­pared) on the one hand with oth­er ancient Euro-Mediter­ranean tra­di­tions\, and on the oth­er hand with the doc­u­men­ta­tion of mod­ern pop­u­lar cul­ture\, espe­cial­ly in cer­tain cul­tur­al­ly con­ser­v­a­tive areas such as cen­tral Greece and south­ern Italy. Stud­ies on ancient Greek and Roman pop­u­lar cul­ture have wit­nessed sig­nif­i­cant devel­op­ments in recent decades. New approach­es and new research have con­tributed to a renewed read­ing of Greek and Roman authors and texts. Build­ing on the expe­ri­ence of folkloricum.it (http://folkloricum.it/)\, the time now seems ripe for organ­is­ing an Inter­na­tion­al Con­gress of Stud­ies\, aim­ing to bring togeth­er schol­ars from dif­fer­ent dis­ci­plines (includ­ing Clas­sics\, folk­lore stud­ies\, anthro­pol­o­gy\, his­to­ry of reli­gions\, and archae­ol­o­gy) and devot­ed to all aspects of pop­u­lar cul­ture in the Greek and Roman world. These will be the main fields of inter­est:\n 1 – Def­i­n­i­tions and Meth­ods. What is ‘pop­u­lar’? ‘Low­er’ and ‘upper’ cul­tures; ancient and mod­ern cul­tur­al lev­els; diachrony and syn­chrony; ‘pop­u­lar’ and ‘learned’ mag­ic; com­pa­ra­tion and philol­o­gy; oral­i­ty and lit­er­a­cy.\n 2 – Mate­r­i­al Cul­tures. Art; arche­ol­o­gy; his­to­ry and soci­ol­o­gy; objects; dress and clothes; amulets; games and toys; fres­coes and gems.\n 3 – Lan­guages and Non-ver­bal Codes. Non-stan­dard and ver­nac­u­lar gram­mar\, mor­phol­o­gy and lex­i­con; proverbs and pop­u­lar say­ings; ges­tures; music and dances; rid­dles; dreams; curse for­mu­lae.\n 4 – The sacred and the super­nat­ur­al. Cults and rites; fes­ti­vals; reli­gious prac­tices (wed­dings\, mourn­ing\, funer­als\, child-relat­ed pro­tec­tive prac­tices); ‘super­sti­tions’ and beliefs; Evil Eyes; fig­ures of fear: mon­sters\, witch­es\, and oth­ers;\n 5 – Nature and Tech­niques. Animal‑\, plant- and stone-lore; agri­cul­tur­al prac­tices; pop­u­lar med­i­cine\, reme­dies and phar­ma­co­paea; beliefs about stars and celes­tial phe­nom­e­na.\n 6 – Beyond Lit­er­a­ture and Oral­i­ty. Nar­ra­tive pat­terns (types and motifs)\, myths and folk­tales; fables; leg­ends and belief tales; fairy­tales; sub-lit­er­ary gen­res (folk the­atre\, mimes\, pop­u­lar nar­ra­tive lit­er­a­ture); pop­u­lar songs (work-songs\, fes­ti­val-songs\, sea­son­al and quest-songs).\nThe list is not intend­ed to be exhaus­tive\, and pro­pos­als address­ing relat­ed top­ics are also encour­aged.\n Any­one inter­est­ed in con­tribut­ing a paper to the con­fer­ence is invit­ed to sub­mit their title and a brief abstract in one of the con­fer­ence lan­guages (Eng­lish\, Ital­ian\, French\, Span­ish\, Ger­man; papers may be deliv­ered in the same lan­guages) of no longer than 200 words to the two organ­is­ers\, Prof. Tom­ma­so Brac­ci­ni (tommaso.braccini@unisi.it) and Prof. Emanuele Lel­li (prof.emanuele.lelli@gmail.com) by 1 August 2026 (please send a Word doc­u­ment and cc both organ­is­ers).\n Schol­ars at all lev­els of juniority/seniority are equal­ly wel­come.\n\n We will eval­u­ate all sub­mis­sions and inform all appli­cants about accep­tance or rejec­tion by mid-August.\n\n Papers should be no longer than 20 min­utes. DESCRIPTION:Call for papers for the 11th Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence of the Inter­na­tion­al Asso­ci­a­tion of Manichaean Stud­ies\, Istan­bul Medeniyet Uni­ver­si­ty\, 21–25 Sep­tem­ber 2026 (details at: https://www.manichaeism.de/) \n  \nThe idea of form­ing the Inter­na­tion­al Asso­ci­a­tion of Manichaean Stud­ies (IAMS) was advanced at the First Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence of Manichaean Stud­ies held in Lund in 1987. The suc­cess of the con­fer­ence had gen­er­at­ed a gen­uine spir­it of inter­na­tion­al and inter-dis­ci­pli­nary co-oper­a­tion which all the par­tic­i­pants wished to pre­serve and fos­ter through the for­ma­tion of a learned soci­ety. IAMS was offi­cial­ly con­sti­tut­ed at the Sec­ond Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence at Sankt Augustin near Bonn in 1989\, where Pro­fes­sor Kurt Rudolph became its first pres­i­dent (1989–1997). The annu­al Manichaean Stud­ies Newslet­ter\, which orig­i­nal­ly was a pri­vate ini­tia­tive by Dr Aloïs van Tonger­loo\, became the newslet­ter of IAMS; for many years it has now been edit­ed by Assoc. Pro­fes­sor Gun­ner Mikkelsen. At the Third Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence held at Rende in 1993\, it was decid­ed that these con­fer­ences should hence­forth take place once every four years but mem­bers were encour­aged to orga­nize theme-based sym­posia in the inter­ven­ing years. The Fourth Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence took place in Berlin in 1997; here Pro­fes­sor Johannes van Oort became the sec­ond pres­i­dent (1997–2009). The Fifth Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence was held at Naples in 2001\, and the Sixth Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence at Flagstaff in 2005. Pro­fes­sor Samuel Lieu became the third pres­i­dent (2009–2013) at the Sev­enth Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence in 2009 in Dublin. The Eighth Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence took place at Lon­don in 2013; here Dr Enri­co Mora­no became the fourth pres­i­dent (2013–2017). At the Ninth Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence at Turin in 2017\, Pro­fes­sor Nils Arne Ped­er­sen became the fifth pres­i­dent. The Tenth Inter­na­tion­al Con­fer­ence was held in Aarhus in 2022; here Pro­fes­sor Jason BeDuhn became the sixth pres­i­dent.

SUMMARY:God\, Human\, Machine: Images and Imaginations of Religion in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:The con­fer­ence draws atten­tion to the hith­er­to large­ly neglect­ed aes­thet­ic\, eth­i­cal\, and intel­lec­tu­al impli­ca­tions of AI-gen­er­at­ed imagery in reli­gious con­texts. We invite schol­ars and researchers to sub­mit paper pro­pos­als that crit­i­cal­ly exam­ine how AI tech­nolo­gies are reshap­ing reli­gious images and imag­i­na­tions across tra­di­tions\, cul­tures\, and social con­texts. We seek con­tri­bu­tions\, which explore the ways in which socio-tech­nolo­gies such as Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence (AI) and com­put­er-gen­er­at­ed imagery (CGI) both inform and are shaped by reli­gious images and imag­i­na­tions across tra­di­tions\, cul­tures\, and social con­texts. We invite the­o­ret­i­cal and empir­i­cal research papers that exam­ine how AI-gen­er­at­ed imagery offers new avenues to ren­der the Unseen tan­gi­ble and enact the expres­sive dimen­sion of reli­gious texts\, as well the ways in which these tech­nolo­gies are employed by reli­gious prac­ti­tion­ers to inform their ideas about human rela­tions to the world and the Sacred.
