SUMMARY:Global Bible: Legacies of (Post-)Colonial Bible Translations in the Arctic\, Australia/Oceania and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:In the past two years\, the Global Bible Project research team has dedicated itself intensively to a critical examination of British and German contributions to the creation of a global Bible\, i.e. the attempt to translate the Bible into all languages of the world in the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. The research team has focused on three case study regions where German and British colonialism once prevailed: the Arctic\, Australia/Oceania and West Africa. Apart from publications in reputable journals\, a significant event of the project in the last two years was the GloBil Conference at Westminster College\, University of Cambridge which brought together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds and from different parts of the world (Africa\, Australia\, Europe). \nThe exhibition will therefore comprise\, for instance\, ancient manuscripts\, translated Bibles and Bible portions in European\, Arctic\, Oceanic\, and West African languages. Visitors will have the opportunity to view physical copies of the earliest translated Bible portions in some of the indigenous languages of these regions. Apart from Bibles\, the exhibition will also comprise linguistic materials such as grammars\, dictionaries\, textbooks\, and other items that contributed to the translation of the Bible. This will demonstrate to visitors the multi-step process behind missionary Bible translations in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is important to mention that\, in most cases\, the languages into which missionaries and their local collaborators sought to translate the Christian scriptures existed initially in oral forms. Consequently\, missionary linguistic endeavors\, encompassing collection of words\, creation of grammars\, primers\, dictionaries\, etc.\, were essential preparatory work prior to the translation of Bible.  In addition to textual material\, the exhibition will showcase ethnographic artefacts related to the three regions which will illuminate the socio-cultural milieu within which missionaries and their local counterparts lived and translated the Bible. It is also important to indicate that a visit to the exhibition will be rewarded with the opportunity to see artworks that were specifically commissioned for the project and executed by Global Majority artists from West Africa and Oceania. The artists\, Leeza Awojobi (Bristol-based Cameroonian poet) and Manfred Wkeng Aseng (New Guinean artist)\, engage  artistically with the post-colonial legacies of missionary Bible translations in their respective regions of interest. Lastly\, but certainly not the least interesting\, the exhibition will display results from the Digital Humanities part of the project led by the Service Center for Digital Humanities of the University of Münster. These will include a digitized map of the global Bible movement and open access database. \nUltimately\, the exhibition seeks to provide a forum for a postcolonial reflection on the legacies of mission-translated Bibles during the era  of European colonialism in the Arctic\, Australia/Oceania\, and West Africa\, foregrounding the essential yet often overlooked contributions of indigenous Bible translators will equally be foregrounded. An exhibition catalogue is being prepared with contributions from selected Bible societies of the United Bible Societies (UBS) and project team members to secure the results of the exhibition. It will be published by the Bible Museum. \nDate and Time\nThe exhibition will commence with an official opening ceremony on 10 October 2025 at 18:00 CET in the Bible Museum. Afterwards\, it will run until 1 March 2026\, during which period visitors will be able to view the exhibition during the Bible Museum’s usual opening hours. \nby Michael Wandusim (Münster)

SUMMARY:Just hit the follow button! - Religious influencers in social media (and their impact beyond)
DESCRIPTION:Gatsvortrag (Hybrid) im Rahmen der “Monday Lectures in Religious\, Social and Cultural Studies” \nFor most people\, social media now determines what information reaches us\, how we maintain social relationships\, and how we construct our world. Religious content on social media is also becoming increasingly important with regard to the religious field. Over the past few years\, a wide range of religious content creators from presumably every religious traditions have made their way onto Instagram\, TikTok\, and other platforms\, preaching or showing their faith\, answering questions\, and providing guidance on how to live a righteous life. The lecture aims to introduce this field and shed light on its impact on the religious sphere beyond digital media and for\nfollowers. In addition\, some systematic approaches from religious studies will be offered which allow the empirical phenomena to be linked to broader debates on the current transformation of religion and religiosity. \nMeeting-Link:\nhttps://uni-erfurt.webex.com/uni-erfurt/j.php?MTID=m10411c41e05695a280eacf54d16ec63a \nMeeting-Kennnummer:\n2785 288 7752 \nMeeting-Kennwort:\nmhUYdHaM736

SUMMARY:Missionaries\, Socialism\, and Ethnocentrism: Global Protestantism and Ethical Dilemmas in Revolutionary Ethiopia
DESCRIPTION:Global Histories Lectures on Cristianity and Religions \nThis lecture studies how Cold War-era Protestant mission work became entangled with revolutionary politics and ethnonationalist movements in Africa. Focusing on the theologian\, scholar of Islam\, missionary\, and political campaigner Gunnar Hasselblatt (1928–1997)\, the lecture traces transnational flows between Socialist Ethiopia and West Berlin\, carving out the ethical disputes arising in this arena. After the 1979 murder of Gudina Tumsa\, the general secretary of the Ethiopian Mekane Yesus Church\, Hasselblatt’s advocacy for the Oromo liberation struggle led to a rift between the Berlin Mission and the Ethiopian church centring on ethnonationalism\, co-operation with socialist governments\, and the nature of church partnerships. The case illuminates broader transformations in 20th-century global Christianity while documenting how East-West German anxieties about church and socialism became inseparable from Ethiopian revolutionary debates.

SUMMARY:Religious and Secular Worldmaking. Narrative Cultures and the Perception of Differences.
DESCRIPTION:Do religious and secular people experience the world differently? This lecture discusses early 19th-century emigrant narrative cultures as practices of worldmaking. Migrating to North America not to discover but to create a new world\, social reformers such as radical pietists\, socialists\, and early communists were united by the utopian spirit of their time. Yet in their new environment\, their communal storytelling diversified rapidly: routines were disturbed\, everyday activities gained renewed significance\, new experiences and challenges became worth recounting. \nThe presentation explores the relationship between intellectual argument\, vernacular religious practice and education of the senses at the Frontier. It investigates the historical\, aesthetic\, and perceptual conditions under which conflicting worldviews gained epistemic affordance as contrasting modes of observing\, interpreting\, and enacting the world. \nAnja Kirsch (NTNU Trondheim). SUMMARY:A convert and his daughters: What did it mean to be "Jewish" or "Muslim" in 12th-century Baghdad?
DESCRIPTION:Multiple stories are told about the conversion to Islam of a Jewish physician\, Abū al-Barakāt al-Baghdādī (physician\, ca. 1077-ca. 1165). The basics seem clear: the biographers agree that he was at first Jewish and became Muslim after he was already established at the ruler’s court. But what was it that made him “Jewish” beforehand and “Muslim” afterwards? Sarah Stroumsa has characterized conversion as a “broad spectrum of choices” and as a process rather than a moment. Which choices could Abū al-Barakāt make about his own religious affiliation\, and which ones were available to his three daughters? In this presentation\, I will investigate the case of Abū al-Barakāt in order to probe the social\, linguistic\, legal\, and ethnic dimensions of conversion in medieval Baghdad.
