SUMMARY:Global Bible: Legacies of (Post-)Colonial Bible Translations in the Arctic\, Australia/Oceania and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:In the past two years\, the Glob­al Bible Project research team has ded­i­cat­ed itself inten­sive­ly to a crit­i­cal exam­i­na­tion of British and Ger­man con­tri­bu­tions to the cre­ation of a glob­al Bible\, i.e. the attempt to trans­late the Bible into all lan­guages of the world in the nine­teenth to ear­ly twen­ti­eth cen­turies. The research team has focused on three case study regions where Ger­man and British colo­nial­ism once pre­vailed: the Arc­tic\, Australia/Oceania and West Africa. Apart from pub­li­ca­tions in rep­utable jour­nals\, a sig­nif­i­cant event of the project in the last two years was the Glo­Bil Con­fer­ence at West­min­ster Col­lege\, Uni­ver­si­ty of Cam­bridge which brought togeth­er schol­ars from dif­fer­ent dis­ci­pli­nary back­grounds and from dif­fer­ent parts of the world (Africa\, Aus­tralia\, Europe). \nThe exhi­bi­tion will there­fore com­prise\, for instance\, ancient man­u­scripts\, trans­lat­ed Bibles and Bible por­tions in Euro­pean\, Arc­tic\, Ocean­ic\, and West African lan­guages. Vis­i­tors will have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to view phys­i­cal copies of the ear­li­est trans­lat­ed Bible por­tions in some of the indige­nous lan­guages of these regions. Apart from Bibles\, the exhi­bi­tion will also com­prise lin­guis­tic mate­ri­als such as gram­mars\, dic­tio­nar­ies\, text­books\, and oth­er items that con­tributed to the trans­la­tion of the Bible. This will demon­strate to vis­i­tors the mul­ti-step process behind mis­sion­ary Bible trans­la­tions in the nine­teenth and ear­ly twen­ti­eth cen­turies. It is impor­tant to men­tion that\, in most cas­es\, the lan­guages into which mis­sion­ar­ies and their local col­lab­o­ra­tors sought to trans­late the Chris­t­ian scrip­tures exist­ed ini­tial­ly in oral forms. Con­se­quent­ly\, mis­sion­ary lin­guis­tic endeav­ors\, encom­pass­ing col­lec­tion of words\, cre­ation of gram­mars\, primers\, dic­tio­nar­ies\, etc.\, were essen­tial prepara­to­ry work pri­or to the trans­la­tion of Bible.  In addi­tion to tex­tu­al mate­r­i­al\, the exhi­bi­tion will show­case ethno­graph­ic arte­facts relat­ed to the three regions which will illu­mi­nate the socio-cul­tur­al milieu with­in which mis­sion­ar­ies and their local coun­ter­parts lived and trans­lat­ed the Bible. It is also impor­tant to indi­cate that a vis­it to the exhi­bi­tion will be reward­ed with the oppor­tu­ni­ty to see art­works that were specif­i­cal­ly com­mis­sioned for the project and exe­cut­ed by Glob­al Major­i­ty artists from West Africa and Ocea­nia. The artists\, Leeza Awo­jo­bi (Bris­tol-based Cameroon­ian poet) and Man­fred Wkeng Aseng (New Guinean artist)\, engage  artis­ti­cal­ly with the post-colo­nial lega­cies of mis­sion­ary Bible trans­la­tions in their respec­tive regions of inter­est. Last­ly\, but cer­tain­ly not the least inter­est­ing\, the exhi­bi­tion will dis­play results from the Dig­i­tal Human­i­ties part of the project led by the Ser­vice Cen­ter for Dig­i­tal Human­i­ties of the Uni­ver­si­ty of Mün­ster. These will include a dig­i­tized map of the glob­al Bible move­ment and open access data­base. \nUlti­mate­ly\, the exhi­bi­tion seeks to pro­vide a forum for a post­colo­nial reflec­tion on the lega­cies of mis­sion-trans­lat­ed Bibles dur­ing the era  of Euro­pean colo­nial­ism in the Arc­tic\, Australia/Oceania\, and West Africa\, fore­ground­ing the essen­tial yet often over­looked con­tri­bu­tions of indige­nous Bible trans­la­tors will equal­ly be fore­ground­ed. An exhi­bi­tion cat­a­logue is being pre­pared with con­tri­bu­tions from select­ed Bible soci­eties of the Unit­ed Bible Soci­eties (UBS) and project team mem­bers to secure the results of the exhi­bi­tion. It will be pub­lished by the Bible Muse­um. \nDate and Time\nThe exhi­bi­tion will com­mence with an offi­cial open­ing cer­e­mo­ny on 10 Octo­ber 2025 at 18:00 CET in the Bible Muse­um. DESCRIPTION:Die Ver­anstal­tung ist Teil der Berlin Sci­ence Week und wird gemein­sam organ­isiert vom Mobil­ität­shaus (Berlin) und vom Son­der­forschungs­bere­ich 1475 „Meta­phern der Reli­gion“ der Ruhr-Uni­ver­sität Bochum.  \nDer Ter­min ist der 6. Novem­ber 2025 von 16:30 bis 19:30 Uhr. Sie kön­nen sich unkom­pliziert per Zoom zuschal­ten oder aber vor Ort in Berlin teil­nehmen. \nDie Ver­anstal­tung bringt auf orig­inelle Weise den Diskurs um die Verkehr­swende mit geis­teswis­senschaftlichen Per­spek­tiv­en zusam­men. Ins­beson­dere wird disku­tiert\, wie Mobil­ität in ver­schiede­nen religiösen Tra­di­tio­nen betra­chtet wird: Kommt man mit dem Auto in den Him­mel? Zugle­ich stellen wir die Frage\, inwieweit der Diskurs um die Verkehr­swende in qua­si-religiösen Dog­men ver­haftet ist und welche religiösen Meta­phern ihn prä­gen – vom Fahrrad­jünger bis zum Verkehrsapos­tel. So wollen wir dazu beitra­gen\, Mobil­ität ganzheitlich zu betra­cht­en: nicht nur als tech­nis­che Her­aus­forderung oder poli­tis­ches Pro­jekt\, son­dern auch als kul­turelles\, ethis­ches und sym­bol­is­ches Feld\, in dem sich unsere Vorstel­lun­gen von Fortschritt\, Ver­ant­wor­tung und Teil­habe verdicht­en.

SUMMARY:Religion(s) in an Age of Digitalization
DESCRIPTION:This sym­po­sium from 10–12 Novem­ber 2025 brings togeth­er media schol­ars\, the­olo­gians\, soci­ol­o­gists\, and reli­gious study schol­ars from the Nordic coun­tries and Switzer­land. The aim is to explore the impli­ca­tions of dig­i­tal­iza­tion with­in reli­gious insti­tu­tions across these diverse con­texts. A key theme of the sym­po­sium will be the­o­ret­i­cal and empir­i­cal dis­cus­sions sur­round­ing how dig­i­tal­iza­tion relates to—and con­trasts with—other sig­nif­i­cant soci­etal trans­for­ma­tion process­es\, such as medi­a­ti­za­tion and mar­ke­ti­za­tion. The pro­gram will fea­ture pre­sen­ta­tions\, pan­els\, and dis­cus­sions that exam­ine the inter­sec­tions between these two con­texts\, serv­ing as a valu­able venue for col­lab­o­ra­tion and net­work­ing. \nThe sym­po­sium is being orga­nized by Pro­fes­sor Elis­a­beth Tveito Johnsen from Fac­ul­ty of The­ol­o­gy at Uni­ver­si­ty of Oslo\, along with Pro­fes­sor Thomas Schlag\, direc­tor of the UPPP Dig­i­tal religion(s).

DESCRIPTION:Der Vor­trag mit dem Titel „Über­set­zung des Heili­gen: Rudolf Otto auf Geor­gisch zum Sprechen brin­gen“ befasst sich mit den geschichtlichen\, kul­turellen und sozialen Umstän­den sowie den per­sön­lichen Grün­den\, die zur Über­set­zung von Rudolf Ottos Buch geführt haben\, und geht auf die sprach­lichen Her­aus­forderun­gen ein\, die mit der Über­set­zung von Ottos Werk unmit­tel­bar ver­bun­den sind. “Das Heilige” ins Geor­gis­che zu über­tra­gen stellt eine in kom­plexe und vielschichtige Beziehun­gen einge­bet­tete Erfahrung dar\, bei der man sich um die Erschaf­fung\, Gestal­tung und Erschließung eines zukun­ft­sof­fe­nen Raumes bemüht\, in dem man das The­ma Reli­gion wis­senschaftlich\, ohne Angst vor Tabuisierung und Insti­tu­tion­al­isierung des Religiösen\, frei und mutig behan­deln kann. Mate Sar­al­ishvili erzählt uns\, wie er die Haup­tkonzepte aus Ottos Werk (das /Numinöse/\, die Scheu usw.) über­set­zt und wie er dem Buch zwei kurze Anhänge hinzuge­fügt hat: 1. die Mono­grafie von Rudolf Otto und 2. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an event where researchers will share prac­ti­cal exam­ples and ini­tia­tives from their own work\, high­light­ing their efforts to com­mu­ni­cate and engage with their research beyond tra­di­tion­al out­puts. \nWe will fea­ture sci­en­tists who active­ly engage in var­i­ous forms of research com­mu­ni­ca­tion and out­reach. They will share their expe­ri­ences\, chal­lenges\, and suc­cess­es in using dif­fer­ent for­mats and plat­forms to dis­sem­i­nate their research find­ings and engage with broad­er audi­ences. Par­tic­i­pants will gain insights into inno­v­a­tive approach­es to research engage­ment\, such as sci­ence com­mu­ni­ca­tion through vlogs\, open source plat­forms\, and cit­i­zen sci­ence projects. \nThe invit­ed researchers will also dis­cuss their moti­va­tions and how they per­ceive the added val­ue for their research and vis­i­bil­i­ty.
