SUMMARY:From Archives to Herstory – Women’s Contributions to the Study of Asian Religions
DESCRIPTION:Recent schol­ar­ship advo­cat­ing for glob­al reli­gious his­to­ry empha­sizes the\nneed for reli­gious stud­ies to move beyond euro­cen­trism\, to decon­struct\nide­o­log­i­cal­ly charged and his­tor­i­cal­ly evolv­ing con­cepts\, and to\nacknowl­edge the diverse (non-west­ern) play­ers and exchanges involved in\nthe co-pro­duc­tion of knowl­edge on reli­gions. This work­shop seeks to\ncon­tribute to this broad­er con­ver­sa­tion about the neces­si­ty of epis­temic\ndecen­tring with­in the dis­ci­pline\, focus­ing on the role of women researchers\nin shap­ing reli­gious stud­ies.\nAs fem­i­nist stud­ies have demon­strat­ed\, in a male-dom­i­nat­ed soci­ety\,\nwomen face the chal­lenge to devel­op mul­ti­ple strate­gies to trav­el\, pub­lish\,\nand carve out new spaces for them­selves. In acad­e­mia\, this often means\nsac­ri­fic­ing a tra­di­tion­al aca­d­e­m­ic career and instead cre­at­ing alter­na­tive\npro­files. Con­se­quent­ly\, the knowl­edge of reli­gions pro­duced by women\nresearchers can­not be attrib­uted sole­ly to schol­ars\, but also to writ­ers\,\nartists\, prac­ti­tion­ers\, and indi­vid­u­als whose con­tri­bu­tions have been\nover­looked so far.\nThis work­shop specif­i­cal­ly high­lights per­son­al archive col­lec­tions as a vital\nspace where over­looked encoun­ters\, silenced voic­es\, and inven­tive\nstrate­gies can be brought to light. To facil­i­tate com­par­i­son\, we will focus on\nthe entan­gled his­to­ry of Europe and Asia\, which we view as a par­tic­u­lar­ly\nrich area in the her­sto­ry of reli­gious stud­ies. Such an endeav­our\, how­ev­er\,\nrequires the­o­ret­i­cal aware­ness\, method­olog­i­cal cau­tion\, spe­cif­ic prac­ti­cal\nskills\, and an inter­dis­ci­pli­nary dia­logue\, which we aim to fos­ter open­ly and\ndirect­ly by shar­ing our expe­ri­ences with archival mate­ri­als from women\nresearchers and by stim­u­lat­ing exchanges on our indi­vid­ual research\nagen­das and prac­tices. \nReg­is­tra­tion until Sep­tem­ber 29\, 2025 to: religionswissenschaft@univie.ac.at \nPro­gramme of Work­shop

SUMMARY:Global Bible: Legacies of (Post-)Colonial Bible Translations in the Arctic\, Australia/Oceania and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:In the past two years\, the Glob­al Bible Project research team has ded­i­cat­ed itself inten­sive­ly to a crit­i­cal exam­i­na­tion of British and Ger­man con­tri­bu­tions to the cre­ation of a glob­al Bible\, i.e. the attempt to trans­late the Bible into all lan­guages of the world in the nine­teenth to ear­ly twen­ti­eth cen­turies. The research team has focused on three case study regions where Ger­man and British colo­nial­ism once pre­vailed: the Arc­tic\, Australia/Oceania and West Africa. Apart from pub­li­ca­tions in rep­utable jour­nals\, a sig­nif­i­cant event of the project in the last two years was the Glo­Bil Con­fer­ence at West­min­ster Col­lege\, Uni­ver­si­ty of Cam­bridge which brought togeth­er schol­ars from dif­fer­ent dis­ci­pli­nary back­grounds and from dif­fer­ent parts of the world (Africa\, Aus­tralia\, Europe). \nThe exhi­bi­tion will there­fore com­prise\, for instance\, ancient man­u­scripts\, trans­lat­ed Bibles and Bible por­tions in Euro­pean\, Arc­tic\, Ocean­ic\, and West African lan­guages. Vis­i­tors will have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to view phys­i­cal copies of the ear­li­est trans­lat­ed Bible por­tions in some of the indige­nous lan­guages of these regions. Apart from Bibles\, the exhi­bi­tion will also com­prise lin­guis­tic mate­ri­als such as gram­mars\, dic­tio­nar­ies\, text­books\, and oth­er items that con­tributed to the trans­la­tion of the Bible. This will demon­strate to vis­i­tors the mul­ti-step process behind mis­sion­ary Bible trans­la­tions in the nine­teenth and ear­ly twen­ti­eth cen­turies. It is impor­tant to men­tion that\, in most cas­es\, the lan­guages into which mis­sion­ar­ies and their local col­lab­o­ra­tors sought to trans­late the Chris­t­ian scrip­tures exist­ed ini­tial­ly in oral forms. Con­se­quent­ly\, mis­sion­ary lin­guis­tic endeav­ors\, encom­pass­ing col­lec­tion of words\, cre­ation of gram­mars\, primers\, dic­tio­nar­ies\, etc.\, were essen­tial prepara­to­ry work pri­or to the trans­la­tion of Bible.  In addi­tion to tex­tu­al mate­r­i­al\, the exhi­bi­tion will show­case ethno­graph­ic arte­facts relat­ed to the three regions which will illu­mi­nate the socio-cul­tur­al milieu with­in which mis­sion­ar­ies and their local coun­ter­parts lived and trans­lat­ed the Bible. It is also impor­tant to indi­cate that a vis­it to the exhi­bi­tion will be reward­ed with the oppor­tu­ni­ty to see art­works that were specif­i­cal­ly com­mis­sioned for the project and exe­cut­ed by Glob­al Major­i­ty artists from West Africa and Ocea­nia. The artists\, Leeza Awo­jo­bi (Bris­tol-based Cameroon­ian poet) and Man­fred Wkeng Aseng (New Guinean artist)\, engage  artis­ti­cal­ly with the post-colo­nial lega­cies of mis­sion­ary Bible trans­la­tions in their respec­tive regions of inter­est. Last­ly\, but cer­tain­ly not the least inter­est­ing\, the exhi­bi­tion will dis­play results from the Dig­i­tal Human­i­ties part of the project led by the Ser­vice Cen­ter for Dig­i­tal Human­i­ties of the Uni­ver­si­ty of Mün­ster. These will include a dig­i­tized map of the glob­al Bible move­ment and open access data­base. \nUlti­mate­ly\, the exhi­bi­tion seeks to pro­vide a forum for a post­colo­nial reflec­tion on the lega­cies of mis­sion-trans­lat­ed Bibles dur­ing the era  of Euro­pean colo­nial­ism in the Arc­tic\, Australia/Oceania\, and West Africa\, fore­ground­ing the essen­tial yet often over­looked con­tri­bu­tions of indige­nous Bible trans­la­tors will equal­ly be fore­ground­ed. An exhi­bi­tion cat­a­logue is being pre­pared with con­tri­bu­tions from select­ed Bible soci­eties of the Unit­ed Bible Soci­eties (UBS) and project team mem­bers to secure the results of the exhi­bi­tion. It will be pub­lished by the Bible Muse­um. \nDate and Time\nThe exhi­bi­tion will com­mence with an offi­cial open­ing cer­e­mo­ny on 10 Octo­ber 2025 at 18:00 CET in the Bible Muse­um. DESCRIPTION:The year 2025 marks the 1\,700th anniver­sary of the First\nEcu­meni­cal Coun­cil of Nicaea. To com­mem­o­rate the occa-\nsion\, the Pon­tif­i­cal Gre­go­ri­an Uni­ver­si­ty and the Uni­ver­si­ty\nof Mün­ster are organ­is­ing an inter­na­tion­al con­fer­ence\nenti­tled “The Con­fes­sion of the Coun­cil of Nicaea: His­to­ry\nand The­ol­o­gy”.\nThe aim of the con­fer­ence is to fos­ter dia­logue between his-\ntor­i­cal research on the Coun­cil and sys­tem­at­ic-the­o­log­i­cal\nques­tions con­cern­ing the cur­rent sig­nif­i­cance of the Nicene\nCreed. Each of the two organ­is­ing insti­tu­tions rep­re­sents\nthis aim in its own way: each has a long tra­di­tion of study-\ning the­ol­o­gy and church his­to­ry\, while being con­cerned at\nthe same time with con­tem­po­rary issues of the Chris­t­ian\nfaith in dif­fer­ent region­al\, lin­guis­tic and cul­tur­al con­texts.\nThe con­fer­ence is there­fore divid­ed into two parts. The\nfirst took place from 27 Feb­ru­ary to 1 March 2025 in Rome;\nthe sec­ond will take place from 15 to 17 Octo­ber 2025\nin Mün­ster.

By invert­ing the tra­di­tion­al sem­i­nar struc­ture\, the Forum on Reli­gious Stud­ies pro­vides PhD stu­dents with the oppor­tu­ni­ty to present an extend­ed paper on their cho­sen top­ic\, artic­u­late any uncer­tain­ties or method­olog­i­cal chal­lenges\, and sub­se­quent­ly receive feed­back and respons­es from senior dis­cus­sants as well as fel­low par­tic­i­pants\, includ­ing PhD stu­dents\, doc­tor­al grad­u­ates\, and researchers at var­i­ous stages of their careers. Appli­ca­tions will be reviewed by an inter­nal com­mit­tee of the FBK-ISR cen­tre. \nEli­gi­bil­i­ty cri­te­ria:\nPhD stu­dents in Reli­gious Stud­ies and relat­ed dis­ci­plines are eli­gi­ble to apply. \nAppli­cants must have a demon­stra­ble inter­est in the study of reli­gions and relat­ed phe­nom­e­na. \nHow to apply:\nInter­est­ed can­di­dates are invit­ed to apply by 15/09/2025.
