SUMMARY:Colloquium on Latin America "Reinterpreting Guadalupe: Exploring Generational Transmission and Contemporary Guadalupan Devotion in Guadalajara\, Mexico"
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores questions of transformation in Guadalupan devotion in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara\, Mexico\, approached through lived religion and intergenerational transmission. Since her alleged apparition in the sixteenth century\, the Virgin of Guadalupe has traversed five centuries of Mexican history as a religious icon\, national symbol\, and cultural myth – continually reinvented\, reinterpreted\, and contested. In Mexico today\, her meaning is increasingly negotiated amid religious diversification\, individual autonomy\, shifting forms of\nCatholic belonging\, and popular culture. Drawing on early material and emerging observations from ongoing doctoral fieldwork\, I consider how upper-middle-class emerging adults (ages 24–30) in Guadalajara narrate\, practice\, and experience the importance of the Virgin in their daily lives. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach and a decolonial epistemological framework\, their narratives are situated alongside those of their parents in order to develop an intergenerational perspective on processes of transmission\, possible continuity or rupture\, and reinterpretation. Additionally\, the study takes into account religious diversification in the area by including Catholic\, Protestant/Evangelical\, and non-affiliated participants. Rather than assuming that the significance of the Virgin of Guadalupe corresponds directly to formal religious\naffiliation\, the research explores whether and how the Virgin’s significance may be maintained\, negotiated\, or redefined across different positions. These emerging observations open broader questions concerning contemporary and generational transformations of Marianism in Latin America.

SUMMARY:Conference: Neighboring Textual and Intellectual Traditions: Dialogues\, Polemics\, and Translations
DESCRIPTION:Vom 1. bis 3. \nDie Tagung findet in englischer Sprache statt.

SUMMARY:Online Workshop: Protestant Missionaries and Clinical Medicine\, 1600-1950
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Summary \nDurham University’s Centre for Global Histories of Medicine\, Disease and Health will host an online exploratory workshop on Friday\, 19 March 2027 on Protestant Missionaries and Clinical Medicine\, 1600–1950. \n  \nWorkshop Rationale \nHistorians of colonialism have long recognised the role played by medically-trained protestant missionaries as agents of empire who established Western hospitals and promoted clinical medicine. Yet\, though helpful autobiographies of such clinicians exist\, the specifics of their lives — their lived experiences and individual interface with patients — is often framed via narratives that foreground large colonial institutions such as church mission boards\, colonial office directives\, hospital management or public health agencies. \n  \nWorkshop Questions \nBut who\, precisely\, were these clinicians? Building on recent research that has shown the protestant medical missionaries came from different religious\, social\, gendered and ethnic (including non-European) backgrounds\, the project seeks to develop ways to understand how their training\, motivations and objectives effected their vision of clinical medicine. The workshop seeks to establish a firmer understanding of their everyday lives and activities in clinical contexts with papers that address questions such as: What was the relationship between clinicians’ early theological and clinical training? How did their theological commitments influence doctor-patient relationships? How did their understanding of clinical medicine impact their religious and ethical beliefs? How were their clinical commitments influenced by the beliefs and/or experiences of their patients?

SUMMARY:Conference: (Con)tested Knowledge: Production\, Formation\, and Deconstruction
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge is multifaceted: it is produced in many places\, it has many different contexts\, follows different rules\, and it is created and shared among individuals\, groups and societies. At the same time\, prevailing understandings of knowledge have often been shaped by Eurocentric epistemologies that are historically entangled with colonial and imperial power structures. Feminist\, ecological\, post- and decolonial scholarship has therefore emphasized the need to interrogate dominant epistemic frameworks and to attend to marginalized forms of knowing and wisdom that emerge from different historical and social locations. With the conference theme\, we want to focus on diverse forms of (religious) knowledge and emphasize their values as well as their challenges in today´s struggles.
