SUMMARY:Interdisziplinäre Tagung: Konstellation von Recht und Religion - Interdependenzen revisited
DESCRIPTION:Ziel der Tagung ist es\, das «und» weit­er zu durch­denken\, mit dem «Reli­gion» und «Recht» zueinan­der in Beziehung geset­zt wer­den: Welche unter­schiedlichen Kon­stel­la­tio­nen sind ange­sprochen\, wenn es um Recht und Reli­gion geht? \nHier­für zielt die Tagung darauf ab\, die Ver­schieden­heit der Kon­stel­la­tio­nen jen­seits gängiger Ver­hält­nis­set­zun­gen sicht­bar zu machen. Die «Inter­de­pen­den­zen von Recht und Reli­gion»\, die dem ersten Work­shop (2012) und der daraus fol­gen­den gle­ich­nami­gen Pub­lika­tion den Titel gaben\, sollen dadurch sys­tem­a­tisch weit­er aufgeschlüs­selt wer­den. \nIm Sinne ein­er sys­tem­a­tisieren­den Heuris­tik\, lassen sich vier For­men der Kon­stel­la­tio­nen zwis­chen «Reli­gion» und «Recht» unter­schieden: \n(1) Recht und Reli­gion als getren­nte\, sich gegenüber\, und bisweilen in unter­schiedlichem Grade kon­flik­thaft ent­ge­gen­ste­hende Felder der Gesellschaft. \n(2) Reli­gion inner­halb von Recht beze­ich­net die Art und Weise\, wie inner­halb eines konkreten (staatlichen) Recht­sys­tems «Reli­gion» ver­han­delt\, definiert und bear­beit­et wird. \n(3) Recht inner­halb von Reli­gion zielt auf den Bezug zum Recht\, rechtliche For­ma­tio­nen und Prak­tiken inner­halb konkreter religiös­er Tra­di­tio­nen oder Organ­i­sa­tio­nen. \n(4) Kon­gruen­zen zwis­chen dem\, was unter den Kat­e­gorien Recht und Reli­gion gefasst wird als eine weit­ere Art der Rela­tion\, bei der die Aushand­lung der Gren­zen und Über­lagerun­gen der bei­den Felder selb­st zum The­ma gemacht wird. \nAn dieser heuris­tis­chen Sys­tem­atik ori­en­tiert sich die inhaltliche Struk­turierung der Ver­anstal­tung. Die Unter­schei­dung der Kon­stel­la­tio­nen hält die inhaltliche Beset­zung der bei­den Kat­e­gorien «Reli­gion» und «Recht» offen. Bei­de am empirischen Fall zu spez­i­fizieren ver­tieft das Ver­ständ­nis der Vield­imen­sion­al­ität der disku­tierten Rela­tio­nen. Denn das inter­diszi­plinäre Gespräch zwis­chen Reli­gion­swis­senschaft (und angren­zen­den Diszi­plinen) sowie der Rechtswis­senschaft zeigt\, dass die Vieldeutigkeit des Begriffs «Recht» der Vieldeutigkeit des Begriffs «Reli­gion» in nichts nach­ste­ht.

SUMMARY:Seeing the Lights: Zoroastrians in the Islamic World
DESCRIPTION:The project ‘Arcs of Time: Zoroas­tri­an Philo­soph­i­cal Anthro­pol­o­gy’ project (AOT) has two goals: the first is to crit­i­cal­ly ana­lyze how Zoroas­tri­an thinkers the­o­rized human psy­chophys­i­cal com­po­si­tion and its rela­tion to human his­to­ry\, and the sec­ond is to schol­ars work­ing on Zoroas­tri­an Mid­dle Per­sian lit­er­a­ture and schol­ars work­ing on the mul­ti­fac­eted lit­er­a­ture pre­served in Ara­bic\, since the Zoroas­tri­ans writ­ing in Mid­dle Per­sian were con­tem­po­raries with many well-known Islam­ic authors writ­ing in Ara­bic. The ‘See­ing the Light’ work­shop is designed to achieve the sec­ond goal of aca­d­e­m­ic inte­gra­tion. Par­tic­i­pants are invit­ed to explore the man­i­fold ways Zoroas­tri­ans inter­sect with the wider Islam­ic world; this includes the crit­i­cal inher­i­tance of Greek and Aves­tan thought; the var­i­ous ways the Sasan­ian state was remem­bered by Zoroas­tri­ans and Mus­lims\, Per­sians and Arabs; as well as the local inter­ac­tions between com­mu­ni­ties. We hope to fos­ter dia­logue on the his­tor­i­cal set­ting\, the philo­soph­i­cal issues\, the con­crete debates\, and the sociopo­lit­i­cal struc­tures beneath the texts.

SUMMARY:Engaging the Secular: Conceptions of the Future in Modern Chinese Buddhism (Ming-Feng Wu)
DESCRIPTION:CERES Forschungskol­lo­qui­um \nThis study explores how mod­ern Chi­nese Bud­dhism craft­ed its vision of the future in the ear­ly twen­ti­eth cen­tu­ry by reimag­in­ing the sec­u­lar realm. Instead of view­ing the sec­u­lar as a fixed enti­ty to be accept­ed or reject­ed\, the Chi­nese Bud­dhist com­mu­ni­ty rede­fined its sig­nif­i­cance through its engage­ment with the “mun­dane world.” The research exam­ines three con­cur­rent dimen­sions of this rede­f­i­n­i­tion: first\, the trans­for­ma­tion of the mun­dane realm from a place of suf­fer­ing into a space of poten­tial lib­er­a­tion and mean­ing; sec­ond\, Chi­nese Bud­dhist reflec­tions on the First World War\, which reshaped their under­stand­ing of Buddhism’s world­ly role; and third\, the emer­gence of social move­ments and transna­tion­al net­works that embod­ied these evolv­ing inter­pre­ta­tions. Togeth­er\, these dimen­sions reveal that Chi­nese Buddhism’s vision of the future arose from active­ly redefin­ing the secular’s bound­aries and mean­ings\, posi­tion­ing it as the foun­da­tion for Bud­dhist ful­fill­ment and shap­ing a dis­tinc­tive vision of the future.

SUMMARY:A convert and his daughters: What did it mean to be "Jewish" or "Muslim" in 12th-century Baghdad?
DESCRIPTION:Mul­ti­ple sto­ries are told about the con­ver­sion to Islam of a Jew­ish physi­cian\, Abū al-Barakāt al-Baghdādī (physi­cian\, ca. 1077-ca. 1165). The basics seem clear: the biog­ra­phers agree that he was at first Jew­ish and became Mus­lim after he was already estab­lished at the ruler’s court. But what was it that made him “Jew­ish” before­hand and “Mus­lim” after­wards? Sarah Stroum­sa has char­ac­ter­ized con­ver­sion as a “broad spec­trum of choic­es” and as a process rather than a moment. Which choic­es could Abū al-Barakāt make about his own reli­gious affil­i­a­tion\, and which ones were avail­able to his three daugh­ters? In this pre­sen­ta­tion\, I will inves­ti­gate the case of Abū al-Barakāt in order to probe the social\, lin­guis­tic\, legal\, and eth­nic dimen­sions of con­ver­sion in medieval Bagh­dad.

DESCRIPTION:Do reli­gious and sec­u­lar peo­ple expe­ri­ence the world dif­fer­ent­ly? This lec­ture dis­cuss­es ear­ly 19th-cen­tu­ry emi­grant nar­ra­tive cul­tures as prac­tices of world­mak­ing. Migrat­ing to North Amer­i­ca not to dis­cov­er but to cre­ate a new world\, social reform­ers such as rad­i­cal pietists\, social­ists\, and ear­ly com­mu­nists were unit­ed by the utopi­an spir­it of their time. Yet in their new envi­ron­ment\, their com­mu­nal sto­ry­telling diver­si­fied rapid­ly: rou­tines were dis­turbed\, every­day activ­i­ties gained renewed sig­nif­i­cance\, new expe­ri­ences and chal­lenges became worth recount­ing. \nThe pre­sen­ta­tion explores the rela­tion­ship between intel­lec­tu­al argu­ment\, ver­nac­u­lar reli­gious prac­tice and edu­ca­tion of the sens­es at the Fron­tier. DESCRIPTION:Glob­al His­to­ries Lec­tures on Cris­tian­i­ty and Reli­gions \nThis lec­ture stud­ies how Cold War-era Protes­tant mis­sion work became entan­gled with rev­o­lu­tion­ary pol­i­tics and eth­nona­tion­al­ist move­ments in Africa. Focus­ing on the the­olo­gian\, schol­ar of Islam\, mis­sion­ary\, and polit­i­cal cam­paign­er Gun­nar Has­sel­blatt (1928–1997)\, the lec­ture traces transna­tion­al flows between Social­ist Ethiopia and West Berlin\, carv­ing out the eth­i­cal dis­putes aris­ing in this are­na. After the 1979 mur­der of Gud­i­na Tum­sa\, the gen­er­al sec­re­tary of the Ethiopi­an Mekane Yesus Church\, Hasselblatt’s advo­ca­cy for the Oro­mo lib­er­a­tion strug­gle led to a rift between the Berlin Mis­sion and the Ethiopi­an church cen­tring on eth­nona­tion­al­ism\, co-oper­a­tion with social­ist gov­ern­ments\, and the nature of church part­ner­ships. The case illu­mi­nates broad­er trans­for­ma­tions in 20th-cen­tu­ry glob­al Chris­tian­i­ty while doc­u­ment­ing how East-West Ger­man anx­i­eties about church and social­ism became insep­a­ra­ble from Ethiopi­an rev­o­lu­tion­ary debates.

Reli­gious con­tent on social media is also becom­ing increas­ing­ly impor­tant with regard to the reli­gious field. Over the past few years\, a wide range of reli­gious con­tent cre­ators from pre­sum­ably every reli­gious tra­di­tions have made their way onto Insta­gram\, Tik­Tok\, and oth­er plat­forms\, preach­ing or show­ing their faith\, answer­ing ques­tions\, and pro­vid­ing guid­ance on how to live a right­eous life. The lec­ture aims to intro­duce this field and shed light on its impact on the reli­gious sphere beyond dig­i­tal media and for\nfol­low­ers. Für die Teil­nahme ist allerd­ings die Ken­nt­nis nur ein­er der bei­den Sprachen notwendig. Die Beiträge kön­nen jede Aus­for­mung des Bud­dhis­mus (bspw. Eso­terik\, Reines Land\, Zen oder Nichiren) und des Chris­ten­tums (bspw. protes­tantisch\, katholisch oder ortho­dox) berück­sichti­gen. Auch kön­nen bud­dhis­tis­che Strö­mungen in Deutsch­land oder christliche Strö­mungen in Japan the­ma­tisiert wer­den.\nIn der Tagung soll ein möglichst bre­ites Spek­trum von Per­spek­tiv­en auf das The­ma abge­bildet wer­den\, weshalb der CfP nicht auf eine bes­timmte Form reli­gion­swis­senschaftlich­er Methodik beschränkt ist. Zudem muss die im Titel der Tagung angelegte Ver­gle­ichsper­spek­tive nicht von jedem Beitrag einzeln ein­gelöst wer­den.
