Ziel ist es\, eine dauer­haft ver­füg­bare Ressource für Studierende\, Alum­ni und alle Mit­glieder der deutschsprachi­gen Reli­gion­swis­senschaft aufzubauen. \nIn „Reli­gion­swis­senschaft im Job” sprechen wir mit Religionswissenschaftler*innen über ihren beru­flichen Weg nach dem Studi­um: Wie gelang der Ein­stieg in den Job? Welche Kom­pe­ten­zen waren beson­ders hil­fre­ich? Und wie wer­den Inhalte\, Meth­o­d­en und Denkweisen aus dem reli­gion­swis­senschaftlichen Studi­um heute in der beru­flichen Prax­is angewen­det? \nDie Gespräche wer­den live via Zoom aufgeze­ich­net und anschließend auf YouTube veröf­fentlicht. Inter­essierte aus der deutschsprachi­gen Reli­gion­swis­senschaft kön­nen live teil­nehmen\, zuhören und eigene Fra­gen ein­brin­gen. Pro Jahr sind sechs Episo­den geplant. \nWer als Gäst*in teil­nehmen oder geeignete Gesprächspartner*innen vorschla­gen möchte\, kann sich gerne bei uns melden. \nMod­eriert wird der Pod­cast von Isis Mru­gal­la Kalm­bach­er\, M.A. (Uni­ver­sität Tübin­gen).

SUMMARY:Buchbesprechung: Boricua Muslims – Everyday Cosmopolitanism among Puerto Rican Converts to Islam
DESCRIPTION:Among Puer­to Rican con­verts to Islam\, mar­gin­al­iza­tion is a fact of dai­ly life. Their “authen­tic­i­ty” is ques­tioned by oth­er Mus­lims and by fel­low Borícua on the island and in the Unit­ed States. At the same time\, they exist under the shad­ow of US col­o­niza­tion and as Mus­lims in the con­text of Amer­i­can empire. To be a Puer­to Rican Mus­lim\, then\, is to nego­ti­ate iden­ti­ty at numer­ous inter­sec­tions of diver­si­ty and dif­fer­ence. Draw­ing on years of ethno­graph­ic research and more than a hun­dred inter­views con­duct­ed in Puer­to Rico\, New York\, Flori­da\, Texas\, New Jer­sey\, and online\, Ken Chit­wood tells the sto­ry of Puer­to Rican Mus­lims as they con­struct a shared sense of peo­ple­hood through every­day prac­tices. Borícua Mus­lims thus pro­vides a study of cos­mopoli­tanism not as a polit­i­cal ide­al but as a mun­dane social real­i­ty – a real­i­ty that com­pli­cates schol­ar­ly and pub­lic con­ver­sa­tions about race\, eth­nic­i­ty\, and reli­gion in the Amer­i­c­as. Unter Don­ald Trump nimmt ihr Ein­fluss allerd­ings stark zu – ob es um Abtrei­bungsver­bot\, Schöp­fungslehre im öffentlichen Schu­lun­ter­richt\, tra­di­tionelle Geschlechter­rollen oder Ähn­lich­es geht. Der Vor­trag zeigt anhand einzel­ner Mit­glieder von Trumps aktuellem Kabi­nett ver­schiedene Strö­mungen des Christlichen Nation­al­is­mus auf\, die auf ver­schiedene Weisen das Chris­ten­tum in der amerikanis­chen Kul­tur und Gesellschaft noch stärk­er ver­ankern wollen\, als es ohne­hin der Fall ist. Dabei wer­den unter­schiedliche christlich-reak­tionäre Welt­bilder und Strate­gien eben­so skizziert wie promi­nente Führungsper­so­n­en in Trumps eng­stem Umkreis.

SUMMARY:Soundtrack of Two Movements: Islamic Modernism and the Nationalist Reinvention of Hindustani Music in Colonial North India
DESCRIPTION:Islam­ic mod­ernism and efforts to can­on­ize raga-based music as part of a new­ly imag­ined “nation­al cul­ture” emerged on the Indi­an sub­con­ti­nent at rough­ly the same time\, both respond­ing to the chal­lenges posed by British colo­nial­ism and West­ern cul­tur­al dom­i­nance. How­ev­er\, while Islam­ic mod­ernist reform­ers such as Sayyid Ahmad Khan pro­mot­ed edu­ca­tion­al reform as a rem­e­dy for Mus­lim polit­i­cal “decline\,” many Mus­lims – acute­ly aware of their increas­ing­ly vul­ner­a­ble posi­tion as a reli­gious minor­i­ty – felt exclud­ed from the mod­ern rein­ven­tion of Hin­dus­tani music as a “clas­si­cal” tra­di­tion and nation­al cul­tur­al her­itage\, a project advo­cat­ed by upper-caste Hin­du fig­ures like V.N. Bhatkhande. Inte­grat­ing two fields of inquiry rarely treat­ed con­joint­ly in the his­to­ri­og­ra­phy of mod­ern South Asia\, this talk exam­ines the links\, over­laps\, and entan­gle­ments between these reformist move­ments\, argu­ing that they shared intel­lec­tu­al con­cerns\, edu­ca­tion­al strate­gies\, and polit­i­cal anx­i­eties to a greater extent than is gen­er­al­ly assumed. This series of work­shops will help you to artic­u­late the impor­tance of well-researched social sci­en­tif­ic infor­ma­tion and direct­ly con­tribute to knowl­edge cre­ation\, includ­ing through social media and data­bas­es. \nThis fourth work­shop in the series address­es the urgent need for effec­tive sci­ence com­mu­ni­ca­tion in the study of reli­gions. It also sets stu­dents up for jobs in acad­e­mia or in fields adja­cent to acad­e­mia\, includ­ing civ­il ser­vice\, pub­lic rela­tions\, media\, muse­ums and gal­leries\, and research in oth­er con­texts. This last work­shop day will dis­cuss how Reli­gious Stud­ies stu­dents can have a pub­lic impact with their research\, con­tribut­ing to social trans­for­ma­tion. The prac­ti­cal ses­sion will be split into the Ger­man and UK con­texts\, where stu­dents will hear from experts in both acad­e­mia and beyond on careers after the study of reli­gion.

DESCRIPTION:Annemarie Schim­mel (1922–2003) zählt zu den prä­gend­sten Stim­men der Islamwis­senschaft im 20. Jahrhun­dert. Ihr Werk wird bis heute inten­siv genutzt\, doch das Reli­gionsver­ständ­nis\, das ihren Stu­di­en zugrunde liegt\, ist bis­lang kaum sys­tem­a­tisch reflek­tiert wor­den. Der Vor­trag wid­met sich dieser Leer­stelle und unter­sucht den Ein­fluss Friedrich Heil­ers (1892–1967)\, der Schim­mel 1946 nach Mar­burg holte und ihr Denken nach­haltig prägte. Anhand aus­gewählter Schriften wird gezeigt\, wie Schim­mel Heil­ers reli­gion­sphänom­e­nol­o­gis­chen Ansatz über­nahm und dessen Typol­o­gisierung von prophetis­ch­er und mys­tis­ch­er Reli­gion auf den Islam und Sufis­mus übertrug. Der Vor­trag lädt dazu ein\, Schim­mels Werk als Teil reli­gion­swis­senschaftlich­er Debat­ten im 20. SUMMARY:Summer School on Zoroastrian Texts and Mithraic monuments in Rome
DESCRIPTION:This sum­mer school\, to be held in Rome in the last week of August\, opens path­ways into impor­tant mon­u­ments of ancient reli­gious his­to­ry span­ning East and West. Michael Staus­berg (Uni­ver­si­ty of Bergen)\, Céline Redard (Uni­ver­si­ty of Stras­bourg)\, and Gian­fil­ip­po Ter­ri­bili (La Sapien­za Uni­ver­si­ty of Rome) will intro­duce par­tic­i­pants to tex­tu­al and mate­r­i­al mon­u­ments: texts from ancient Iran com­posed in a litur­gi­cal lan­guage (Aves­tan) and sub­ter­ranean sanc­tu­ar­ies where rit­u­al assem­blies were held in hon­or of the “for­eign” deity Mithras (with roots in Indi­an and Iran­ian reli­gions). While the Aves­tan texts\, which also men­tion the deity Mithra\, are until our days recit­ed by Zoroas­tri­an priests\, the so-called Mys­ter­ies of Mithras have died out with the spread of Chris­tian­i­ty. In our sum­mer school\, tex­tu­al stud­ies will go hand in hand with site vis­its in Rome. DESCRIPTION:Ziel der Tagung ist es\, das «und» weit­er zu durch­denken\, mit dem «Reli­gion» und «Recht» zueinan­der in Beziehung geset­zt wer­den: Welche unter­schiedlichen Kon­stel­la­tio­nen sind ange­sprochen\, wenn es um Recht und Reli­gion geht? \nHier­für zielt die Tagung darauf ab\, die Ver­schieden­heit der Kon­stel­la­tio­nen jen­seits gängiger Ver­hält­nis­set­zun­gen sicht­bar zu machen. Die «Inter­de­pen­den­zen von Recht und Reli­gion»\, die dem ersten Work­shop (2012) und der daraus fol­gen­den gle­ich­nami­gen Pub­lika­tion den Titel gaben\, sollen dadurch sys­tem­a­tisch weit­er aufgeschlüs­selt wer­den. \nIm Sinne ein­er sys­tem­a­tisieren­den Heuris­tik\, lassen sich vier For­men der Kon­stel­la­tio­nen zwis­chen «Reli­gion» und «Recht» unter­schieden: \n(1) Recht und Reli­gion als getren­nte\, sich gegenüber\, und bisweilen in unter­schiedlichem Grade kon­flik­thaft ent­ge­gen­ste­hende Felder der Gesellschaft. \n(2) Reli­gion inner­halb von Recht beze­ich­net die Art und Weise\, wie inner­halb eines konkreten (staatlichen) Recht­sys­tems «Reli­gion» ver­han­delt\, definiert und bear­beit­et wird. \n(3) Recht inner­halb von Reli­gion zielt auf den Bezug zum Recht\, rechtliche For­ma­tio­nen und Prak­tiken inner­halb konkreter religiös­er Tra­di­tio­nen oder Organ­i­sa­tio­nen. \n(4) Kon­gruen­zen zwis­chen dem\, was unter den Kat­e­gorien Recht und Reli­gion gefasst wird als eine weit­ere Art der Rela­tion\, bei der die Aushand­lung der Gren­zen und Über­lagerun­gen der bei­den Felder selb­st zum The­ma gemacht wird. \nAn dieser heuris­tis­chen Sys­tem­atik ori­en­tiert sich die inhaltliche Struk­turierung der Ver­anstal­tung. Die Unter­schei­dung der Kon­stel­la­tio­nen hält die inhaltliche Beset­zung der bei­den Kat­e­gorien «Reli­gion» und «Recht» offen. Bei­de am empirischen Fall zu spez­i­fizieren ver­tieft das Ver­ständ­nis der Vield­imen­sion­al­ität der disku­tierten Rela­tio­nen. Denn das inter­diszi­plinäre Gespräch zwis­chen Reli­gion­swis­senschaft (und angren­zen­den Diszi­plinen) sowie der Rechtswis­senschaft zeigt\, dass die Vieldeutigkeit des Begriffs «Recht» der Vieldeutigkeit des Begriffs «Reli­gion» in nichts nach­ste­ht.

SUMMARY:Seeing the Lights: Zoroastrians in the Islamic World
DESCRIPTION:The project ‘Arcs of Time: Zoroas­tri­an Philo­soph­i­cal Anthro­pol­o­gy’ project (AOT) has two goals: the first is to crit­i­cal­ly ana­lyze how Zoroas­tri­an thinkers the­o­rized human psy­chophys­i­cal com­po­si­tion and its rela­tion to human his­to­ry\, and the sec­ond is to schol­ars work­ing on Zoroas­tri­an Mid­dle Per­sian lit­er­a­ture and schol­ars work­ing on the mul­ti­fac­eted lit­er­a­ture pre­served in Ara­bic\, since the Zoroas­tri­ans writ­ing in Mid­dle Per­sian were con­tem­po­raries with many well-known Islam­ic authors writ­ing in Ara­bic. The ‘See­ing the Light’ work­shop is designed to achieve the sec­ond goal of aca­d­e­m­ic inte­gra­tion. Par­tic­i­pants are invit­ed to explore the man­i­fold ways Zoroas­tri­ans inter­sect with the wider Islam­ic world; this includes the crit­i­cal inher­i­tance of Greek and Aves­tan thought; the var­i­ous ways the Sasan­ian state was remem­bered by Zoroas­tri­ans and Mus­lims\, Per­sians and Arabs; as well as the local inter­ac­tions between com­mu­ni­ties. We hope to fos­ter dia­logue on the his­tor­i­cal set­ting\, the philo­soph­i­cal issues\, the con­crete debates\, and the sociopo­lit­i­cal struc­tures beneath the texts.

SUMMARY:Engaging the Secular: Conceptions of the Future in Modern Chinese Buddhism (Ming-Feng Wu)
DESCRIPTION:CERES Forschungskol­lo­qui­um \nThis study explores how mod­ern Chi­nese Bud­dhism craft­ed its vision of the future in the ear­ly twen­ti­eth cen­tu­ry by reimag­in­ing the sec­u­lar realm. Instead of view­ing the sec­u­lar as a fixed enti­ty to be accept­ed or reject­ed\, the Chi­nese Bud­dhist com­mu­ni­ty rede­fined its sig­nif­i­cance through its engage­ment with the “mun­dane world.” The research exam­ines three con­cur­rent dimen­sions of this rede­f­i­n­i­tion: first\, the trans­for­ma­tion of the mun­dane realm from a place of suf­fer­ing into a space of poten­tial lib­er­a­tion and mean­ing; sec­ond\, Chi­nese Bud­dhist reflec­tions on the First World War\, which reshaped their under­stand­ing of Buddhism’s world­ly role; and third\, the emer­gence of social move­ments and transna­tion­al net­works that embod­ied these evolv­ing inter­pre­ta­tions. Togeth­er\, these dimen­sions reveal that Chi­nese Buddhism’s vision of the future arose from active­ly redefin­ing the secular’s bound­aries and mean­ings\, posi­tion­ing it as the foun­da­tion for Bud­dhist ful­fill­ment and shap­ing a dis­tinc­tive vision of the future.

SUMMARY:A convert and his daughters: What did it mean to be "Jewish" or "Muslim" in 12th-century Baghdad?
DESCRIPTION:Mul­ti­ple sto­ries are told about the con­ver­sion to Islam of a Jew­ish physi­cian\, Abū al-Barakāt al-Baghdādī (physi­cian\, ca. 1077-ca. 1165). The basics seem clear: the biog­ra­phers agree that he was at first Jew­ish and became Mus­lim after he was already estab­lished at the ruler’s court. But what was it that made him “Jew­ish” before­hand and “Mus­lim” after­wards? Sarah Stroum­sa has char­ac­ter­ized con­ver­sion as a “broad spec­trum of choic­es” and as a process rather than a moment. Which choic­es could Abū al-Barakāt make about his own reli­gious affil­i­a­tion\, and which ones were avail­able to his three daugh­ters? In this pre­sen­ta­tion\, I will inves­ti­gate the case of Abū al-Barakāt in order to probe the social\, lin­guis­tic\, legal\, and eth­nic dimen­sions of con­ver­sion in medieval Bagh­dad.
