SUMMARY:Soundtrack of Two Movements: Islamic Modernism and the Nationalist Reinvention of Hindustani Music in Colonial North India
DESCRIPTION:Islamic modernism and efforts to canonize raga-based music as part of a newly imagined “national culture” emerged on the Indian subcontinent at roughly the same time\, both responding to the challenges posed by British colonialism and Western cultural dominance. However\, while Islamic modernist reformers such as Sayyid Ahmad Khan promoted educational reform as a remedy for Muslim political “decline\,” many Muslims – acutely aware of their increasingly vulnerable position as a religious minority – felt excluded from the modern reinvention of Hindustani music as a “classical” tradition and national cultural heritage\, a project advocated by upper-caste Hindu figures like V.N. Bhatkhande. Integrating two fields of inquiry rarely treated conjointly in the historiography of modern South Asia\, this talk examines the links\, overlaps\, and entanglements between these reformist movements\, arguing that they shared intellectual concerns\, educational strategies\, and political anxieties to a greater extent than is generally assumed. It explores the role of sound and music in the lives of Muslim reformers\, modernizers\, and political activists; evaluates the importance of song\, poetry\, and performance to both Hindu and Muslim nationalism; and analyzes Muslim responses to growing sociocultural marginalization\, showing how music became a key site for negotiating colonial modernity\, identity\, and national belonging. \nThe event can also be viewed online at https://uni-erfurt.webex.com/uni-erfurt-de/j.php?MTID=mb1467bd4fb479b4bbcc7b3f0666c51c1. SUMMARY:Die Christlichen Rechte in den USA

SUMMARY:Buchbesprechung: Boricua Muslims – Everyday Cosmopolitanism among Puerto Rican Converts to Islam
DESCRIPTION:Among Puerto Rican converts to Islam\, marginalization is a fact of daily life. Their “authenticity” is questioned by other Muslims and by fellow Borícua on the island and in the United States. At the same time\, they exist under the shadow of US colonization and as Muslims in the context of American empire. To be a Puerto Rican Muslim\, then\, is to negotiate identity at numerous intersections of diversity and difference. Drawing on years of ethnographic research and more than a hundred interviews conducted in Puerto Rico\, New York\, Florida\, Texas\, New Jersey\, and online\, Ken Chitwood tells the story of Puerto Rican Muslims as they construct a shared sense of peoplehood through everyday practices. Borícua Muslims thus provides a study of cosmopolitanism not as a political ideal but as a mundane social reality – a reality that complicates scholarly and public conversations about race\, ethnicity\, and religion in the Americas. Expanding the geography of global Islam and recasting the relationship between religion and Puerto Rican culture\, Borícua Muslims is an insightful reckoning with the manifold entanglements of identity amid latemodern globalization. \nThe event can also be viewed online at https://uni-erfurt.webex.com/uni-erfurt/j.php?MTID=m7778341be8f4ab70a51b35781db97dd9. SUMMARY:Conference: Buddhist and Christian Perspectives on the Mind
DESCRIPTION:The topic of this conference is a sequel to 2024’s “Buddhist Christian Dialogues on the Body.” The 2026 conference will present different aspects of the mind from Buddhist and Christian perspectives. Traditional conceptions of the mind\, its possible transformation\, its relation to ultimate reality and its role in conceptions of life after death will be discussed against the background of contemporary perspectives from neuroscience.

SUMMARY:Summer School for Cultural and Social Studies (ESSCSS)
DESCRIPTION:Religion and Society: Communities\, Power Relations\, and Materialites \nThe Summer School is aimed at early-career researchers in the historical sciences\, religious studies\, and related disciplines (such as cultural anthropology or literary studies). Within the framework of the Summer School\, questions of the distribution of power in past societies will be brought into focus\, among them the aspect of lived religion\, that is\, everyday religious practices beyond theological debates\, reflection\, and confession. Using various theories and case studies\, we aim to explore how religion\, as a social phenomenon\, has contributed to the formation of communities and power structures\, while at the same time being subject to constant change and continual renegotiation of power relations. The attendants will gain a new set of theoretical and methodological skills that they can apply to their own projects\, as well as with a deep understanding of a number of ancient and medieval cases studies.

SUMMARY:IAHR Workshop: Study of Religion Without an Object? Global Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:The event is organized by the Estonian Society for the Study of Religions in cooperation with the University of Tartu and is an official Summer School of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR)\, with partial funding from the IAHR. This workshop aims to bring together both theoretical reflections as well as specific case studies that analyse the contemporary scholarly understandings of the object of the study of religion and propose viable directions forward.

SUMMARY:Eating and drinking with gods: a comparative workshop
DESCRIPTION:Narratives and practices of offering hospitality to the divine have a place in numerous religions past and present. Across geographies and periods\,gods and other invisible beings are offered human food and drink in human settings.Buddhism\, Hinduism\, Judaism and Christianity today\, and Graeco-Roman\, Hittite and Egyptian religions in antiquity\, are just some of the religions that offer instances of hospitality for\, and even forms of commensality with\, the divine.\nEating and drinking with gods involves complex forms of belief. On the one hand\, such hospitality holds out the promise of interaction with the divine in a knowable human context\, in the hope of anchoring divine presence in the here and now. On the other hand\, many of these practices and stories are marked by a sense of limitation. They respond to a need for proximity with the divine\, yet often also reflect the uncertainty of divine presence and the challenge of imagining gods and invisible beings eating in a human setting.\n\nThe workshop will bring together experts in different religions\, geographies and periods with the aim of exploring hospitality for the divine from a comparative perspective. The primary focus is the religious imagination. We are inviting proposals for papers on practices\, narratives and visual art in any context\, on topics including:\n\n-How do worshippers imagine commensality with the gods?\n-How are abstract beliefs anchored in concrete manifestations of the divine? To what extent\, and how\, is abstract divine presence made concrete through various sorts of divine anthropomorphism?\n-How do mythical narratives and visual representations of human hospitality for gods relate to ritual practice?\n-How do humans experience divine presence during rituals by anchoring it in objects and spatial configuration? How do practices of hosting gods that use props and spaces help worshippers experience divine presence in the here and now?\n-How does offering human-style hospitality to the gods compare to blood sacrifice and to practices of leaving foodstuff such as cakes for gods? How is human presence and human-divine interaction imagined in each?\n-The historical development of these practices as anchored innovations. How does hospitality for the gods arise in different cultures? To what extent is it based on earlier practices and discourses of hospitality for (distinguished) humans?\nConfirmed speakers: Simon Goldhill\, Ute Hüsken\, Rita Langer and Tanya Luhrmann.\nPlease send an abstract of ca. 250 words together with a biography of up to 100 words to Saskia Peels-Matthey (s.peels@rug.nl) and Felix Budelmann (f.j.budelmann@rug.nl). Papers will be 25 minutes\, the deadline for abstracts is April 1st.

SUMMARY:First International Congress of Studies on Popular Cultures in Greece and Rome\, from II millennium BCE to modern folklore
DESCRIPTION: Although Greek and Roman literature rarely focuses explicitly on popular culture\, a substantial body of evidence allows us to reconstruct what may be described as the folklore of the ancient world. From precious testimonies emerge beliefs and ‘superstitions’\, folktales and proverbs\, imaginary beings\, songs and other types of musical forms\, folk-pharmacopoeia and medicinal remedies\, apotropaic gestures and practices\, along with many other traits\n characteristic of a popular culture of the ancients. This Greek and Roman folklore can often be approached (and effectively compared) on the one hand with other ancient Euro-Mediterranean traditions\, and on the other hand with the documentation of modern popular culture\, especially in certain culturally conservative areas such as central Greece and southern Italy. Studies on ancient Greek and Roman popular culture have witnessed significant developments in recent decades. New approaches and new research have contributed to a renewed reading of Greek and Roman authors and texts. Building on the experience of folkloricum.it (http://folkloricum.it/)\, the time now seems ripe for organising an International Congress of Studies\, aiming to bring together scholars from different disciplines (including Classics\, folklore studies\, anthropology\, history of religions\, and archaeology) and devoted to all aspects of popular culture in the Greek and Roman world. These will be the main fields of interest:\n 1 – Definitions and Methods. What is ‘popular’? ‘Lower’ and ‘upper’ cultures; ancient and modern cultural levels; diachrony and synchrony; ‘popular’ and ‘learned’ magic; comparation and philology; orality and literacy.\n 2 – Material Cultures. Art; archeology; history and sociology; objects; dress and clothes; amulets; games and toys; frescoes and gems.\n 3 – Languages and Non-verbal Codes. Non-standard and vernacular grammar\, morphology and lexicon; proverbs and popular sayings; gestures; music and dances; riddles; dreams; curse formulae.\n 4 – The sacred and the supernatural. Cults and rites; festivals; religious practices (weddings\, mourning\, funerals\, child-related protective practices); ‘superstitions’ and beliefs; Evil Eyes; figures of fear: monsters\, witches\, and others;\n 5 – Nature and Techniques. Animal‑\, plant- and stone-lore; agricultural practices; popular medicine\, remedies and pharmacopaea; beliefs about stars and celestial phenomena.\n 6 – Beyond Literature and Orality. Narrative patterns (types and motifs)\, myths and folktales; fables; legends and belief tales; fairytales; sub-literary genres (folk theatre\, mimes\, popular narrative literature); popular songs (work-songs\, festival-songs\, seasonal and quest-songs).\nThe list is not intended to be exhaustive\, and proposals addressing related topics are also encouraged.\n Anyone interested in contributing a paper to the conference is invited to submit their title and a brief abstract in one of the conference languages (English\, Italian\, French\, Spanish\, German; papers may be delivered in the same languages) of no longer than 200 words to the two organisers\, Prof. Tommaso Braccini (tommaso.braccini@unisi.it) and Prof. Emanuele Lelli (prof.emanuele.lelli@gmail.com) by 1 August 2026 (please send a Word document and cc both organisers).\n Scholars at all levels of juniority/seniority are equally welcome.\n\n We will evaluate all submissions and inform all applicants about acceptance or rejection by mid-August.\n\n Papers should be no longer than 20 minutes. SUMMARY:God\, Human\, Machine: Images and Imaginations of Religion in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:The conference draws attention to the hitherto largely neglected aesthetic\, ethical\, and intellectual implications of AI-generated imagery in religious contexts. We invite scholars and researchers to submit paper proposals that critically examine how AI technologies are reshaping religious images and imaginations across traditions\, cultures\, and social contexts. We seek contributions\, which explore the ways in which socio-technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer-generated imagery (CGI) both inform and are shaped by religious images and imaginations across traditions\, cultures\, and social contexts. We invite theoretical and empirical research papers that examine how AI-generated imagery offers new avenues to render the Unseen tangible and enact the expressive dimension of religious texts\, as well the ways in which these technologies are employed by religious practitioners to inform their ideas about human relations to the world and the Sacred.

SUMMARY:11th International Conference of the International Association of Manichaean Studies
DESCRIPTION:Call for papers for the 11th International Conference of the International Association of Manichaean Studies\, Istanbul Medeniyet University\, 21–25 September 2026 (details at: https://www.manichaeism.de/) \n  \nThe idea of forming the International Association of Manichaean Studies (IAMS) was advanced at the First International Conference of Manichaean Studies held in Lund in 1987. The success of the conference had generated a genuine spirit of international and inter-disciplinary co-operation which all the participants wished to preserve and foster through the formation of a learned society. IAMS was officially constituted at the Second International Conference at Sankt Augustin near Bonn in 1989\, where Professor Kurt Rudolph became its first president (1989–1997). The annual Manichaean Studies Newsletter\, which originally was a private initiative by Dr Aloïs van Tongerloo\, became the newsletter of IAMS; for many years it has now been edited by Assoc. Professor Gunner Mikkelsen. At the Third International Conference held at Rende in 1993\, it was decided that these conferences should henceforth take place once every four years but members were encouraged to organize theme-based symposia in the intervening years. The Fourth International Conference took place in Berlin in 1997; here Professor Johannes van Oort became the second president (1997–2009). The Fifth International Conference was held at Naples in 2001\, and the Sixth International Conference at Flagstaff in 2005. Professor Samuel Lieu became the third president (2009–2013) at the Seventh International Conference in 2009 in Dublin. The Eighth International Conference took place at London in 2013; here Dr Enrico Morano became the fourth president (2013–2017). At the Ninth International Conference at Turin in 2017\, Professor Nils Arne Pedersen became the fifth president. The Tenth International Conference was held in Aarhus in 2022; here Professor Jason BeDuhn became the sixth president.

SUMMARY:Foundations & Fluidity - 20th Anniversary Conference of the International Society for the Study of Religion\, Nature\, and Culture (ISSRNC)
DESCRIPTION:20th Anniversary Conference of the\nInternational Society for the Study of Religion\, Nature\, and Culture (ISSRNC) \nOctober 10–14\, 2026 | Casa Artom\, Venice\, Italy \nDeadline for Proposals | March 15\, 2026 \nFoundations and Fluidity will mark the 20th anniversary of the International Society for the Study of Religion\, Nature\, and Culture (ISSRNC)—a milestone not only for the Society but also for the emerging field of Religion and Nature/Ecology. Over the past two decades\, this field has matured into a vibrant area of interdisciplinary scholarship\, with several graduate programs now training researchers and scholars. Our conferences provide essential spaces for these scholars to collaborate\, build networks\, and workshop their research. \nThroughout the modern era\, many of the social\, political\, and epistemological structures that humans have regarded as stable “foundations” have begun to liquefy under the pressures of the contemporary polycrisis—climate disruption\, colonial legacies\, imperialism\, and the globalization of neoliberal capitalism. As Zygmunt Bauman argues in his concept of “liquid modernity\,” modernity’s supposedly solid institutions and systems are giving way to a condition in which foundations are no longer fixed but shifting\, eroding\, or reforming in unpredictable ways. This is as true of religious institutions and epistemologies as it is of ecological\, economic\, and political systems. \nThe conference theme takes inspiration from these dynamics. We invite reflection on how ecological\, cultural\, political\, religious\, and epistemological structures are being tested\, eroded\, and reconfigured in an increasingly fluid world. Here fluidity is not just about water\, it is also about identities\, displacements\, political contestations\, and economic restructuring. \nThe 20th anniversary conference of the ISSRNC provides an ideal opportunity to revisit and reassess the foundations of the field of Religion and Nature/Ecology. We gather at a moment when both literal and metaphorical foundations are shifting: glaciers are melting\, political systems are buckling\, and the epistemological structures that have undergirded modern knowledge production are under strain. Venice offers a powerful space to consider these transformations—a city defined by both its enduring foundations and its perpetual negotiation with fluidity. \nAs scholars working at the intersections of religion\, nature\, and culture\, this conference invites us to think with and through these dynamics: to explore the challenges and possibilities that emerge as foundations liquefy\, and as new forms of resilience and meaning-making arise in their wake. \nIn the spirit of addressing such issues from a variety of perspectives\, the ISSRNC invites proposals that illuminate themes related to foundations (broadly conceived)\, human relationships with fluidity (including water\, epistemic shifts\, and social transformations)\, and resilience-based solutions. \nWe welcome scholarly work on religion\, nature\, and culture from any disciplinary perspective across the social sciences and humanities. \nIn addition\, we specifically invite paper or panel proposals related to the theme Foundations and Fluidity which address the following: \nCosmologies\, Ontologies\, and Ecologies of Fluidity \n\nCritical reflections on the study of religion and nature;\nTheoretical and methodological assumptions that have shaped the field\, and/or important interventions that have shifted its foci;\nAttention to physical and/or cultural foundations of adaptation and resistance;\n\nEcologies of Fluidity \n\nCase studies that illuminate spiritual dimensions of responses to climate-induced water disasters;\nDifferential access to water and other resources based on ethnicity\, race\, or class;\nNarratives and/or direct actions that subvert dominant water management practices;\nDiscourses of plenty or abundance in religious texts\, interpretations\, or practices;\nRitual and symbolic dimensions of water in various contexts\, including adaptive practices in changing conditions;\nCommunity-scale resources and response protocols for unanticipated weather events;\nThe role of water in traditional ecological knowledge systems;\nEcomodernist responses to water crises\, real and imagined;\nExtraction of water resources\, and the use of water in other extractive technologies and practices;\nWater as a tool of war.\n\nCultural and Religious Responses \n\nInquiries into intersections of religion\, gender\, sexuality\, ability\, and embodiment with the conference themes\, especially in relation to erasure\, silencing\, and absence;\nReflections on the scholar’s role in preserving foundations\, fostering innovation\, and enhancing resilience.\n\nInterdisciplinary Reflections \n\nReflection on barriers to interdisciplinary inquiry;\nDiscussion of methods and practices for engaging across disciplines;\nExplorations of differences between trans- and interdisciplinary approaches;\nCase studies examining climate change impacts and conflicts over resources.\n\nVenice is an appropriate place for a discussion of these themes. The conference will be held at Casa Artom in the heart of Venice\, Italy. Participants are encouraged to secure their own lodging as early as possible\, as space in the city center is limited. The International Proposal Review Committee (IPRC) encourages and will also consider proposals on other topics related to the conference themes. We welcome proposals from scholars across the arts and humanities\, natural and social sciences\, inviting all researchers broadly engaged with the nexus of religion\, nature\, and culture.

SUMMARY:20th Anniversary Conference of the International Society for the Study of Religion\, Nature\, and Culture (ISSRNC)
DESCRIPTION:Foundations and Fluidity will mark the 20th anniversary of the International Society for the Study of Religion\, Nature\, and Culture (ISSRNC)—a milestone not only for the Society but also for the emerging field of Religion and Nature/Ecology. Over the past two decades\, this field has matured into a vibrant area of interdisciplinary scholarship\, with several graduate programs now training researchers and scholars. Our conferences provide essential spaces for these scholars to collaborate\, build networks\, and workshop their research.

SUMMARY:Religious Literacy and Religious Pluralism: New Directions for Research
DESCRIPTION:This multidisciplinary symposium brings together international experts on religious literacy and religious pluralism to discuss future directions in the field. Some of the questions we seek to examine include (but are not limited to): How to best define religious literacy? Does religious literacy work and how can we know if it works? What is the relationship between religious literacy and religious pluralism? How are religious literacy and power intertwined?
